Jewels at the Ghillies' Ball - Balmoral Posted by Bryce on June 7, 2021, 3:08 am I came across this out-take from the "Elizabeth R" documentary which shows members of the BRF attending the Ghillies' Ball at Balmoral. It is quite short - only 2 minutes - but I have quite a few question pertaining to the jewels worn to pin back the ladies' tartan sashes. Can any one identify the brooches worn by: Diana Princess of Wales, The Princess Royal and/or The Queen Mother I could not put my finger on any of the three. HM The Queen's jewels should not be a mystery to you (if they are, let me know and I will provide a list), but the other ladies' I can't readily identify. p.s. - If you have never watched "Elizabeth R' you should try to do so. It is a bit dated now but I find it the best of theses "fly-on-the-wall" documentaries about the BRF

QEQM Posted by Beth on June 7, 2021, 8:27 am, in reply to "Re: Jewels at the Ghillies' Ball - Balmoral" I have been trying to track down the brooch worn on Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's sash for a number of years. In 2016 and 2017 I posted on RJWMB that, based on other photographic evidence, I thought that perhaps the brooch was part of Mrs Greville's jewels, as QEQM was first photographed wearing what I think is the same jewel in 1944. It is difficult to spot what QEQM used to secure her sash at the waist; however, I think she used the lacy bow brooch which Mrs Arthur James gave her as a wedding gift. I suspect that the Greville tiara, Queen Alexandra's pearl necklace and the Greville diamond drop earrings don't need any identification!

QEQM" I would love to know if Princess Anne's pearls have a previous history or if the set was purchased for her. I have often wondered if the ruby, pearl and diamond buckle brooch perhaps came from Queen Mary, who we know owned at least 2 of these brooches. So far I haven't found a photo of Queen Mary wearing this particular brooch. The style of brooch was popular around the turn of the twentieth century. I have only ever seen Princess Anne wear this brooch to secure her sash on formal occasions.

Princess Anne" I suspect that we will all be in agreement that Princess Diana was wearing her Collingwood pearl drop earrings, as seen in the first photo below. But which pearl necklace was she wearing? Diana at the Ghillies'Ball. Could she have been wearing this pearl necklace? Necklace A. I though the brooch at the Ghillies Ball looked not a "frilly" as the other examples - with more plain bars etc. No doubt a impact of the tartan pattern behind (and poor quality of the film)

QEQM" Well - if it is the same as the 1940's brooch we are still no closer to solving the mystery - except to know that is was still in use decades later. Now all we need to to have HM or Camilla wear it sometime !
