Interesting observation. I think it depends on each individual play. Here is what I would say from my experience. My daughter was a D1 pitcher who had a great drop ball. Over her 5 year career (Covid year) and close to 700 total innings, I can't tell you how many soft infield grounders to SS, 3B, and 2B she induced with her drop. Thank God her team had solid and vey athletic infielders who could throw from the slot and on the run. They saved so many infield hits for her on poorly hit balls. So I would say infielders practicing this drills are essential. Solid team defenses in this regard is critical in my book.
