When I was finishing University in the ‘80s there was a guy in my Greek class (I was into ancient history and archaeology) who had come back to college having been a teacher for a few years.

He got out for much the same reasons you described. Once a big black kid came in late, put down his Gym bag, and took out a small TV, then proceeded to watch it (no cellphones then of course). He told him quietly to put it away, the kid ignored him. It ended with Kim (my classmate) putting the kid up against the wall. Kim was a former football player and wrestler, and could handle himself physically.

He took the kid to the office, but they let him off and Kim got reprimanded. That’s when he started to think teaching public school wasn’t for him.

40 years ago! No wonder it’s so bad now.
