I was 15 when Radio Orwell, 257M from Foxhall Heath came on air. It was the closest medium wave transmitter to me so I went and took a look at the site. The thought of something sitting in a field silent, yet beaming music to people 30 miles away was intriguing and sparked my interest in transmitter building. The signal from Foxhall has been on constantly since then apart from very short breaks and an extended break after the 87 hurricane . I'm 63 now and I'm sad to see it go so unceremoniously . Of course after the heady days of Orwell the programming went steadily down hill until the dross of today and I certainly dont miss the awful output of Smooth; the purile adverts, the dull scripted presentation and short playlist, and maybe there will be a 257 Orwell archive appearing on 1170 in due course
All very sad - I remember the Great Barton one carrying Saxon Radio from Bury, of course also the better known Orwell radio - long gone.
I saw that list.
I wonder why there are selected transmitters not in the list, eg 1323.....
This one must be the biggest closedowns yet all at one time???

This kind of info is not so easy to find out these days...
