Speaking to the manager of the station a while back, he said they intend to keep the MW TX active in case of emergencies

Listening near the border of Spain and Gibraltar just now. The band is very quiet today! The diplexed RNE mast by the border fence on the Spanish side that carried 774 and 1503 is now silent. However, the 1584 TX that carries the programmes of Radiolé from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in Morocco is still on air as is Radio Gibraltar on 1458. But of course Gibraltar is not Spanish! Well, it sounds like they've all gone as predicted. Another whole load of completely silent frequencies on medium wave. The strongest ones at my location at night were on 855 and 585 KHZ but were not listenable due to being single frequency networks. Several others were detectable but only pretty weak. I know they used to be fairly strong in the west and south west of the UK at night.
