Seems my grandfather's mother had married into the Case family (Case-Hoyt printing for packaging and magazine printing)- and he was trying to build a connection to them. My dad later told me he was probably seeing if he could schmooze in to see if he could cash in $$$ on the relations...lol..nope.
Somehow the oral history from my mom's mother (the Mohawk) says we were also shirttail relatives to Ethan Allen of Ft. Ticonderoga fame in upper NYS.
However, in actual history the Mohawks sided with the British I'm reluctant to believe that one. The Mohawks, led by figures such as Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea), played significant roles in battles and campaigns alongside British forces. Either way they ended up on Six Nations.
The Mohawks were one of the original members of the Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the Haudenosaunee or the Six Nations. Initially, it was a Five Nations Confederacy, consisting of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca. Around 1722, the Tuscarora joined, making it the Six Nations Confederacy.
The Mohawks, known as the "Keepers of the Eastern Door," played a vital role in protecting the confederacy's eastern borders. Today, the Six Nations Confederacy remains a symbol of unity and governance among its member nations. My sister got her membership this year..."just in case" lol...but has been going to the tribal dances and events since we were kids. I've never been..it's enough to keep up with the Jones around here..
