but then be too scared of the shock to come back home and then wander off. This happened to a friend of ours and their dog, and the shock freaked him out enough he wouldn't come close to returning. They had to chase him down. After this happened to them, my wife would never agree to anything but a physical fence, despite knowing the dog likely would learn and never bust through again. She was still too worried it would be hit by a car for there to ever be a "next time".
