Anyone use a GPS / wireless dog fence?

Probably need to have something to keep the new pup out of the yard of the pit pull next door. Never worried about having a fence previously as either 1) there wasn't a house there, or 2) my older dog learned to stay on our side of the woods when there were other dogs on that property.

As we have a large, wooded area I'd prefer not to go with a physical line as I'm not sure it could easily be buried with all the tree roots. (A prior attempt by former neighbors with a physical line was not buried in large sections for this reason.)

Biggest concern is range and how it would work with a solid tree canopy.

She actually got stuck in multiple trees for multiple nights. As she's aged, she either quit climbing trees or figured out how to get down. She's never spent a day of her life inside a house. Garage / outdoor cat who every night sits on the end of my workbench waiting for me to pet her and hand over her nightly treats.

Great cat, and I don't really like cats.

And by “shock” I mean at a very low intensity. It’s more of an unpleasant surprise than a painful shock.

Most animals, especially dogs, learn very quickly.

I understand your position. I do. But each owner needs to weigh the downside of the collar to the harm if the dog gets loose. We had 2 dogs who either scaled an 8’ fence, dug under it, or chewed through the wood planks to get out. Then they were off and crossing busy roads. One dog was trained after 1 shock; the second took 3.

My issue is having a strong-willed dog that chases rabbits and would bust through the barrier...

Now, overdevelopment has pushed out nature’s animal control and the rabbits run rampant basically all year. I walk out my front door and it looks like a fvcking Teletubbies casting call.

So there are visual cues about boundaries that I’m sure helped the dogs adjust. One of them will still cross the line once a week or so, but he usually comes back quickly.

We have it set to a low power, FWIW.

Edit: the big advantage for us when we bought it was that Halo allowed you to draw your boundary line. As of 18 months ago, a lot of the options either limited you to a rectangle or even just had a circular radius. It also has no continuing subscription cost, which at least one other brand did, and they can fuck right off with that.

We had a buried wire shock collar fence previously. But it got cut multiple times

…and we got tired of paying to have it repaired, plus our dollars were wearing out. So rather than pay for new collars and another repair we switched over to Halo.
