Arguably one of the biggest failures of modern numerical weather forecast occurred on the Pacific coast of Mexico since yesterday. While virtually all global and hurricane models predicted a tropical storm's landfall below the Category 1 threshold, Hurricane Otis exploded into a massive monster storm of the highest Category 5.
The unprecedented failure of weather models is likely to bring fatal consequences, especially for the completely unprepared large space of the million city of Acapulco, where the storm made landfall this morning in Category 5 intensity. With top wind gusts of 270 mph, Otis is the strongest hurricane to ever hit Mexico's Pacific coast and the only one to make landfall with the highest intensity.
