That would actually be closer to 42% on the portalArchived Message

Since seniors are out of eligibility, though with the covid bonus year maybe not accurate the past 3 years and this year.

There are 362 Div. I teams. Let's say they all use all 13 scholarships. That's 4,706 D-I scholarship kids.
There were roughly 1,500 scholarship players in the 2023 portal. Some didn't get picked up. Some were in there for the second (or third or fourth) time. Some were grad transfers in there to make their first move (like Domask).
Nonetheless, if a third of the sport is in there each year, the math suggests the majority of players jump somewhere else during their four (or five) years of eligibility.
Related tangent: One of the groups getting bleeped is high school seniors. Coaches are spending more time and more roster spots on transfers, which leaves less room for incoming freshmen.

Underwood makes no secret that he’s going to try to portal over you every year if he can find someone better, and I think that contributes to people jumping ship. Loyalty goes both ways
But I do see from what you posted that the vast majority of our players in fact are transfers and do transfer. It’s just my hunch that it’s not the case elsewhere, but it’s certainly likely that I’m wrong

Just look at Underwood’s tenure. How many players have we seen across 7 rosters? 50+? How many were here start to finish? Trent, DMW, Ayo, Kofi, and Coleman?

who DON’T want to transfer, or be recruited over
I think if you polled “hey should kids be able to transfer to whatever school they want to give themselves the best individual opportunity” it would poll really highly. And that’s really the only talking point I’ve seen debated.
But then you have a kid that wants to commit to a school, and then half the players he signed up to play with up and leave. And then the coach is hitting the portal every off season for seniors who are better than you at your position because they’re older and have simply had more time to develop.
I’d like to know what percentage of players don’t transfer anywhere their whole career. I bet it’s the vast majority. And of the kids who DO transfer, I bet a bunch of them only do it because other players using the portal have given them a shitty situation for the reasons above.
So what you have now is a system that totally benefits a small percentage of kids who want to play the game at the expense of everyone else. It sucks.

I think Izzo and Painter both had good perspectives on this.
Izzo pretty bluntly said that no, a 19 year old doesn't deserve the same freedom of movement as a 50 year old head coach who has worked in the industry for 25 years.
Painter, who has a pretty great perspective as both a great player and coach, thinks players should be able to freely transfer but only after their sophomore year. He has enough time and perspective to know that an 18 year old who has most likely dominated every team he's been on, may respond poorly, irrationally, and immaturely to struggling when they get to college.
