I'm cutting Gerald Everett to give the Bears a starting cap space number of $71.5M. I'm giving Kyler Gordon a 4/$40M extension. Let's backload that, so say ~$65M in cap space. Reserve ~$10M of that for draft picks, so let's say $55M to play with.
Free Agency: You have to start in the trenches. The Bears need 2 new starting OLs, a starting DE, and a meaningful rotational DT at minimum.
Drew Dalman (C)- You have to have a good center in this offense to direct the blocking schemes. Dalman has improved into a top 10 center in the league and is only 26. He gets Lloyd Cushenberry money. 4 years/ $50M ($30M guaranteed).
Kevin Zeitler (G)- Turning 35 this offseason, Zeitler's best years are probably behind him, but he's still playing at a near pro-bowl level. Plus, he already knows this scheme and can help teach it on and off the field. 1 year/ $8M fully guaranteed.
Chase Young (DE)- He hasn't lived up to being the 2nd overall pick from 2020, but he did just have a very solid season under future DC Dennis Allen. He only had 5.5 sacks but had a career high 34 pressures. Plus, he's still only 25. 3 years/ $40M ($20M).
Luke Farrell (TE) and Hunter Long (TE)- Two block-first TEs that will allow Kmet to play more off the line. Total of $3M combined.
NFL Draft: Pick 10- Ashton Jeanty (RB) Boise St. You could continue to reinforce the line with Will Campbell from LSU to play LG, but I think there's a good chance he's already gone. I don't love Texas' Kelvin Banks Jr. for this scheme. I would understand Armand Membou from Mizzou to play tackle if Braxton Jones isn't healthy/slide to LG if Jones is healthy. I also could see Malaki Starks, who is very Minkah Fitzpatrick-y to give the defense a versatile weapon, but let's get a true gamewrecker. Ashton Jeanty has all the talent to be a top 5 running back in the NFL and this is a run-first scheme.
Pick 39- T.J. Sanders (DT) South Carolina Sanders is a pass-rushing wrecking ball on the inside. 6'4" 290, quick, and strong. He can start off on sub packages to maximize his strengths.
Pick 41- Trade for Pick 45 and 115
Pick 45- Tyler Booker (G) Bama Huge but nimble with a high football IQ. Starts immediately at LG.
Pick 72- Jalen Royals (WR) Utah St Burner with a ton of vertical speed.
Pick 115- Luke Kandra (G) Cincinnati One of my favorite mid round picks. I think he's going to be really good. He can study for a year behind Zeitler at RG.
Pick 148- David Walker (EDGE) Central Arkansas I obviously haven't watched him. Looks like an undersized pass rush specialist. You can never have too many pass rushers.
Pick 197- Jailin Walker (LB) IU Nickel and dime package LB. Undersized but can cover. Also looks like a special teamer.
Pick 235- Thor Griffith (DT) Louisville No idea, but the name is fun and he's a big dude who looks like he can help stop the run.
