Illini Basketball vs. Washington Pre-Game and Game Thread (Thursday, 8pm on FS1)

A bit of discussion on Washington from the Purdue thread, so I'll borrow some of that and add some more.

Washington is currently 60 in the Net. They are 1-6 in Q1 matchups, but other than a 17 point loss at home to MSU, they've stayed within 10 points on all their Q1 losses (including @Purdue and @Nebraska). Translation? Wouldn't be out of the norm to expect a closely contested game tomorrow night.

They are without their key guy Desmond Claude, and that's a big reason they've struggled. They are led in points and rebounds by their freshman forward from Germany, Hans Steinbach (averaging 17.5 points and 11 rebounds). He has won BT freshman of the week twice (for comparison, Wagler has won it 4 times and Mirk 2 times). They also have a pretty good guard in Zoom Diallo...he is a three point threat somewhat, as is Yates (another guard).

For those of you under a rock, Illinois is the toast of the town right now (although Purdue's loss at IU last night might take the shine off a tiny bit). We are currently 6th in the NET, and poised for a huge revenge matchup against Nebraska in Lincoln on Sunday. However, as noted, with Washington's ability to hang around against good teams, a loss in focus could make Thursday scary.

Play tough out of the gate. Lock down Steinbach. Get a big lead. Play the bench and rest our guys that will only have a two day turnaround to play Nebraska.

Obviously the dream scenario would have been getting him back. But if he had stayed in the 15-30 range where there was legitimate hope of maybe getting him back, your offseason gets really tough when not knowing if you have the NIL and roster spot for another star player or not.

So it’s much better for us that we can now know with certainty that he’s gone and can already start working on his eventual replacement if it’s an overseas guy.

The younger Cubit did too, so that one bothered me a million times less than Lovie's poser kid.

Tyler has undoubtedly earned his stripes now with the way he researches NBA offenses to build ours, and obviously, the Keaton recruitment is just bonkers good.

Can take the paycut to go to an MVC school and get experience in an HC role.

Then comes back and coaches at UI.

Between giving him credit for discovering Wagler and then now the credit for transforming the offense. He had 15 minutes with the media this week to talk about Keaton and the offense, which is unusual.

I think Brad is trying to get eyes on Tyler so he can jump to a HC job somewhere else and build experience.

On Purdue win: Great win, lots of talk nationally, and a couple of NCAA mandated off days after that game, and now a couple of days to get ready for Washington

On Washington: Very talented, one of the best bigs in the country, good size, solid defensively. Steinbach is a potential draft choice. Need same mentality as Purdue...keeping their bigs off the glass. Diallo has improved a lot from last year. They're coming off a win, we'll need to play well

On Tyler and the offense: we have good players, Tyler's done a good job of putting guys in places to have success and not do too much outside of their comfort zone, simplifying the game. Coaching with him means a lot to Brad...Brad says he was "pretty much an absentee father" when his kids were young, never coached his kids when they were young. To have this opportunity to be with Tyler now is awesome, and it means a lot to Brad. Tyler works really hard and is professional. Tyler is the math behind everything, smarter than Brad, studies and talks NBA with everybody. Brad stays out of the way and listens, doesn't always agree and will question, allows Tyler to convince them.

On David's ankle and Jakstys: David is fine with a couple days of rest, Jason is out with a blood clot in shoulder area that is being treated. Updates to come.

On shot selection ID: lots of emphasis on identifying good shots, this has helped clearly communicate with players what the coaches are looking for. Been very positive for the players.

On Purdue buzz: sure, awesome win, but focus on Washington. That's why we play a crazy non-con so players learn to quickly move on to the next challenge.

On Ty: Participated in practice yesterday for first time since groin injury. Wait and see pattern still.

On offensive evolution over 3-4 years: Always thought we needed offense to win, but it's not about action you run, it's about maximizing your best and most efficient players and putting them in their best spots. Redefining shot selection has been huge. Nice having lots of bigs that can shoot 3's.

On Tyler identifying Keaton: Brad trusted Tyler to know what to look for, Keaton was a great passer, shooter, has positional size. Didn't take a lot of convincing once Brad watched him on film and then got to know him and his story.

On "did you expect Keaton to be this good": No, of course not. Hard to know until you can grind on people in practice to really know who somebody is. He was good this summer, but also good once practice started.

On "if you had to scout yourself, what would you do.": He asked himself if he was Painter, what would he do differently. Nothing. We just hit the shots and took our opportunities. Matt didn't coach anything wrong. We made shots and it worked. We won the rebounding battle. That's why we won.

On redefining pace: it's helped. Brad would like us to play a bit faster, but not reckless. Value possessions. 4 passes to space, 6 to action. Efficient shots that are "our shots"

On defensive matchups/Washington: they are elite on the offensive boards. They can hurt you with physicality. Diallo is good midrange. We need to rebound.

On Royal Palm invitational next year (I guess there was an article that we're considering going?): Brad's only excited about Washington and our current team, other people handle the other stuff.

Because regardless of whether or not you think they could have slowed down Keaton doing something different, switching their bigs on the perimeter absolutely killed them on the glass, and is arguably why we won the game.

To have this opportunity to be with Tyler now is awesome, and it means a lot to Brad. Tyler works really hard and is professional. Tyler is the math behind everything, smarter than Brad, studies and talks NBA with everybody. Brad stays out of the way and listens, doesn't always agree and will question, allows Tyler to convince them. On David's ankle and Jakstys: David is fine with a couple days of rest, Jason is out with a blood clot in shoulder area that is being treated. Updates to come. On shot selection ID: lots of emphasis on identifying good shots, this has helped clearly communicate with players what the coaches are looking for. Been very positive for the players. On Purdue buzz: sure, awesome win, but focus on Washington. That's why we play a crazy non-con so players learn to quickly move on to the next challenge. On Ty: Participated in practice yesterday for first time since groin injury. Wait and see pattern still. On offensive evolution over 3-4 years: Always thought we needed offense to win, but it's not about action you run, it's about maximizing your best and most efficient players and putting them in their best spots. Redefining shot selection has been huge. Nice having lots of bigs that can shoot 3's. On Tyler identifying Keaton: Brad trusted Tyler to know what to look for, Keaton was a great passer, shooter, has positional size. Didn't take a lot of convincing once Brad watched him on film and then got to know him and his story. On "did you expect Keaton to be this good": No, of course not. Hard to know until you can grind on people in practice to really know who somebody is. He was good this summer, but also good once practice started. On "if you had to scout yourself, what would you do.": He asked himself if he was Painter, what would he do differently. Nothing. We just hit the shots and took our opportunities. Matt didn't coach anything wrong. We made shots and it worked. We won the rebounding battle. That's why we won. On redefining pace: it's helped. Brad would like us to play a bit faster, but not reckless. Value possessions. 4 passes to space, 6 to action. Efficient shots that are "our shots" On defensive matchups/Washington: they are elite on the offensive boards. They can hurt you with physicality. Diallo is good midrange. We need to rebound. On Royal Palm invitational next year (I guess there was an article that we're considering going?): Brad's only excited about Washington and our current team, other people handle the other stuff.

I think Purdue is officially out with these three losses. They still have @Nebraska, @Iowa, @OSU and Michigan, MSU and Wisconsin at home. With three BT losses already, I'm not sure they can recover.

For us...I think it's....not likely. Now, all bets are off if we keep playing at the current clip, but the road is rough. @Nebraska, @MSU, @UCLA, @USC (probably all without Boswell)...along with Michigan and Wisconsin at home. The November tourney and blow out of Gonzaga was obviously impressive and set the narrative, but their schedule the last 2 months has actually been pretty soft. So let's see how they look after their February gauntlet.

during that one Thanksgiving week. They have definitely not been that team in the weeks/months that followed, still easily one of the top teams in the country but nothing close to the wagon they appeared that week.

They are ranked #10 in Torvik since the start of the year and #16 if you isolate it to their last 7 games. Obviously the fact that they are capable of that Thanksgiving week at any time is a scary thought, but to me they are just one of a group of 7-8 really good teams more than any kind of juggernaut.

Shot lights out in a few games where we looked unbeatable (at Oregon, at Indiana), but couldn't replicate it the rest of the year.

This year's team is different. Obviously 47% against Purdue on Saturday is not something we should count on. But we've been consistently at 35-ish% all year

I kind of think we are as it stands right now, but we still need to show it in these upcoming games and get a healthy Boswell back.

And I would probably bet on Michigan to win the league if I had to. My only point here is that I just don’t think that they are the dominant force that we thought they were a couple months ago. Their guard play is just too underwhelming.

At minimum I’d bet on Arizona, Duke, and UConn to win a title before I’d bet on Michigan to do so, even with UConn’s recent struggles.

But weird things happen in those Thanksgiving tourneys. Very rarely is what happens set in stone for the rest of the season. Yes, that 40 point win happened, but Michigan isn't nearly as good and Gonzaga nearly as bad as that game would indicate.

And since then, they haven't played anyone, until last night.

Obviously a very good team, and the metrics are otherworldly. But they're not unbeatable.

A bit of discussion on Washington from the Purdue thread, so I'll borrow some of that and add some more.

Washington is currently 60 in the Net. They are 1-6 in Q1 matchups, but other than a 17 point loss at home to MSU, they've stayed within 10 points on all their Q1 losses (including @Purdue and @Nebraska). Translation? Wouldn't be out of the norm to expect a closely contested game tomorrow night.

They are without their key guy Desmond Claude, and that's a big reason they've struggled. They are led in points and rebounds by their freshman forward from Germany, Hans Steinbach (averaging 17.5 points and 11 rebounds). He has won BTT freshman of the week twice (for comparison, Wagler has won it 4 times and Mirk 2 times). They also have a pretty good guard in Zoom Diallo...he is a three point threat somewhat, as is Yates (another guard).

For those of you under a rock, Illinois is the toast of the town right now (although Purdue's loss at IU last night might take the shine off a tiny bit). We are currently 6th in the NET, and poised for a huge revenge matchup against Nebraska in Lincoln on Sunday.
