my oldest will be a freshman in high school this fall and we aren't at that point yet, and i'm not really sure where her path will go.

and to be fair, i'm not sure there's ever been a point in my life where i said, "this is what i want to be when i grow up" aside from the youthful dreams of being a professional baseball or basketball player. i went to college and started out as an administration of justice major because i thought i wanted to be a cop or some career in law enforcement but that went by the wayside after the first year or so. i then just kind of picked a major that i thought would provide various opportunities for a career but really without a specific lane, and that's where i am today. i never thought "this is what i want to do the rest of my life"

Took a heath occupations course senior year where they get their CNA license and get to experience various health occupations (duh). She learned she didn't want to be a nurse (no blood no poop) but that speech language pathology was interesting to her. She then got to spend 6 or 8 weeks following SLPs in various settings an that cemented it.

Now my 16 y/o HS Junior has no idea and just wants to find something that can cover her spending habits. Ideally, she wants to get into Gies, but I don't think she'll have the grades. So maybe ACES for financial planning or marketing, or Illinois State business school. (She will walk out of HS as basically a college sophomore with all the dual credit classes, however.)

Spent last weekend at her school with her coaches and her freshmen teammates. They got to watch a spring game and interact with the older girls. Spent a ton of time with her new roommate. Got fitted for her uniforms, cleats, and gear and most importantly, got her uniform number. Really great weekend, and I am so excited for her.

Just found out on Monday that we hadn’t submitted all required financial aid paperwork to GWU

Which is why they hadn’t given us any need based aid. So we filed everything on Monday but won’t hear from them until late next week. I’m almost sure they won’t offer us enough to be competitive with UMD, but we are stuck still waiting.

I will say the whole application and admission process has been a customer experience disaster from a parent perspective. First, while things are sort of centralized now, most schools still have some special requirements with either the application or the aid process, and you have to hunt that down for each school.

And second, all admissions info is firewalked behind internet application portals, and are only provided to the student. And further, aid offers are often split between multiple sites requiring separate logins for an individual school. None of them have a single landing page that just tells you the full offer, both scholarships and need based aid. And all the fragmented and confusing info they provide has to be extracted from a lazy, uncommunicative teenager since as parent I get absolutely no info, despite being the one who is actually paying for things.

Has done created a bunch of potential trap doors for you to fall through because you don’t know each school specific rules. Not to mention, it’s created a situation where kids are applying to so many schools that they are overwhelmed and not necessarily able to do holistic evaluations of the students as they say they are supposed to be doing.

Good luck on the financial aid front. I hope they give you a great package and sprout can make it happen if that’s what he wants.

Believe he's going to study biology (possibly genetics?) with a plan for vet school. ISU will be cheaper out of state with scholarships than Illinois in-state.

It probably also helped ISU that 1) he visited on a great weather summer day and on the day they were playing in the Sweet 16 (visit was over by game time), 2) his Illinois visit was on the day of the snowstorm that shut down many schools across Central Illinois for a few days, and 3) he has a few buddies going to ISU.

Also, per quick search, Iowa State has a better Vet Med program than Illinois which is what he eventually wants to do.

When LBK and I started dating, a Cyclone game watch for any football or sporting event was 20-50 people tops, at a parade of ever-rotating Chicago bars.

Fast Forward 15 years, and they're to the point where they've been packing Murphy's Bleachers for football and basketball games on the reg.

We'll see how that changes as the football team is decimated, but LBK will be the first to tell you that when she moved here 20 years ago that the ISU alumni pool here felt pretty much non-existent, and she's blown away by the explosion. I remember when we saw her first ISU billboard off the expressway over a decade ago and thought, "Oh, they're FINALLY targeting Chicago."

My daughter wanted to go her own direction-she had spent so much time in Champaign over the years that it felt like home, and she wanted to go someplace new and different.

and other Early action schools . But went 0/8 of regular decision schools so was brutal last few days .

But he has his heart set on UT Austin Mech E . Loves the school and were it not for me insisting he waits for all the results he would have committed long ago.

I was very disappointed with the UIUC waitlist at Grainger Eng but I am coming to terms with the fact that my kiddo loves UT way more than UIUC. Hook'em I guess :-)

Given that for UT Austin the Mech E admit rate was 7%-8% (according to the admitted students event) , he did good.

Congrats! All great schools, but damn must be super tough to get into U of I engineering these days*

Classmates with my daughter. Don't think he applied to Illinois from HS and always planned on going to the local juco first to save money and transfer in.

Edit: Going back a number of years, there are a number of students from that high school who do that, mostly as a way to save money.

Like most schools they make it ridiculously convoluted to actually see the financial aid offer and their portal wasn’t working, so we aren’t sure if he got any need based aid from GW.

But unless he absolutely falls in love with them when we visit, and maybe even then, it’s going to be UMD.

….was a really good choice. Elliott’s reputation and cachet and all that is great. But I’d still be paying down debt nearly 15 years on.

Plus, had I not gone to Pitt GSPIA, I never would’ve met my two mentors, one of whom is a former Tomcat pilot and UIUC grad.

I think their reputation and the network would help both with an initial job and would have a lasting impact. But I don’t think GW is enough better than MD to pay much more. And if Sprout changes his mind about PoliSci, then MD is a better choice academically, too.

I do think it would be good for him to have the urban campus experience of GW. Test drive living in a city to see if that’s something he likes. But again, that’s not worth 20 or 30k more per year.

then I talked to a family friend who was a young partner at Williams & Connolly in DC and he said I would be stupid to go to George Washington given the cost differential between Florida and George Washington. Which is good because it saved us about $25,000 a year in the 1990s and because at least my grad school now has three football and three basketball national championships!

So I feel your cost differential pain.

Program until after he applied. I’m not sure he would’ve gotten into UNC as an out-of-state student anyway, so between NC State being the actual engineering school within the state and the relative difficulty of admission of both schools, I think he made the right decision. But he’s intrigued by the idea of getting a degree from both institutions at the same time.

I happened to post this because it was the first one to show up when I Google searched the program.

He’s got several good choices and merit scholarship options including a full ride at UGA(which is common for kids there). He would love to go to UGA but wants to major in engineering so he’s not really considering it.
