On Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to pay TSA agents all current and back pay amidst the ongoing partial government shutdown.

The news comes just after the GOP-led House rejected the Senate-approved measure to fund all of the Department of Homeland Security — except ICE and Border Patrol — through the end of the fiscal year.

Per Fox News’ Jacqui Heinrich, there is “still not a lot of clarity” on how exactly the Trump administration will make the payments — “what mechanism it will happen through.”

not sure i buy that. Ukraine fought the Russians to a stand still from 2014-2022, and then did so through the first 18-24 months post invasion before drones were used en masse. When the Ukrainians talk about their biggest need, it is always that they need more and better trained infantry soldiers to take and hold terrain.

drones will be important in any conflict in the future, they are not in of themselves decisive. one reason the Russians are not having success is they do not mass their forces and converge protection effects around them. they penny packet troops in very small numbers across the entire front, rarely do they move forward in something larger than a tank company team. this allows UKR to mass drones on small elements and destroy them. the Russians do not maintain tempo. tempo is hard, it requires good staff work. if the Russians were more capable of planning and attacking at a decisive point with mass, i think they would be more successful despite drone proliferation. there is a narrative that the Russians throw a lot of mass at the Ukrainians. they really don't do that. they throw away a lot of platoons and companies one rifle squad at a time. that's not mass as understood as a principle of war.

there will always be a need for mobile protected firepower (a tank. but 3000 years ago it was a chariot. then 2300 years ago a Macedonian phalanx. then 1000 years ago a knight on horseback. And so on.) but a tank, or a chariot, or a knight, or whatever it has to be protected through layers of different assets, this was true before 2022, and the Ukrainians and Russians are both bad at this from a tactical and technical proficiency standpoint.

There were a lot of predictions about how warfare had irrevocably changed during WWI. Then WWII looked very little like WWI. i think the war in Ukraine is like that. drones will always be used going forward, but it's just another tool. the nature of war will remain unchanged.

drones are grouped 1-5. Group 1 are small quadcopters like the DJI Mavic First Person Viewer (FPV), Group 2 are large quadcopters and small fixed wing like the Shahed 101, Group 3 are medium fixed wing like the Shahed 136, Group 4 and 5 are large fixed wing like the MQ-9 Reaper.

US forces are very good at shooting down any of these in a static fixed site with a lot of radar coverage and electronic warfare (EW) jamming coverage; that's why we have not taken very many casualties to this point. it will be much more difficult to do that across the width and depth of a brigade or larger battle space with units needing to move frequently to conduct resupply, reposition, move on the attack, etc.

group 1s are the big killer in Ukraine. There is no easy technological solution to kill them given the large distances both the Russians and Ukrainians have to cover; the air defense bubble cannot be big enough. putting large-ish combat units on the ground inside the range of FPVs is going to be pretty sporty. it can be done for a short time in specific times and places, it will be hard to do at scale for any length of time.

Coyote missile costs 100k. It is a missile, but it is relatively cheap. APKWS is an even cheaper drone killer. That’s a 2.75” rocket with guidance. We have at least 100s of thousands of those rockets in the inventory. It’s a bad trade to shoot a Patriot Block 3 at a drone. I don’t know how much that happens. Lot of media reporting, but who knows.

UKR mostly kills with Group 1 and 2 quadcopters. So do the Russians. Both are very proficient. Easier to be the defender than the attacker, so RU casualties are sky high.

But that story is also one of neither side having the skill or training to do combined arms operations. So they stumble forward and get smoked.

The US and Israel have presumably hit the high value targets that we have been able to locate, so the marginal impact of continued air strikes will get lower over time (assuming there isn’t a cumulative breaking point where the regime collapses, which seems unlikely.)

On the flip side, the closure of the straits of Hormuz will have an increasing impact over time, especially since the potential impacts of an extended choking of supply doesn’t seem to have been priced into markets yet.

Given how small a number of actual attacks it has taken to deter shipping traffic and disrupt the insurance market, it seems unlikely that air power will be able to degrade Iranian capability so much to re-open the straits.

So the status quo favors Iran over time. Israel tried to shift this with their attack on Iranian oil infrastructure, but their retaliation seemed to show they had escalation dominance in that arena and deterred any future such attacks.

I think this is why there’s discussion about the possibility of some sort of US “boots on the ground” as another attempt to try and change the course of tge war.

and I wasn't saying that you can't care about the environment and drive a gas guzzling car. My personal conclusion, honestly, is that there is nothing that I can personally do that is going to move the needle on the environment when there are massive corporations that will continue to pollute. It's that that I no longer care about the environment, I very much still do, it's just that I've given up hope that there's anything that can be done that is going to make a meaningful difference, and relieving myself of that burden helps me sleep a little better at night.

But think back to the 1980s. People still threw garbage out their windows in the car. Dumped motor-oil down the drain, etc.

All of those attitudes have changed. The environment is physically cleaner than it was 40 years ago.

I mean, you personally, probably have made food decisions (subconsciously or not) that are better for your environment and ecology.

We're not individually defeating big industry but small decisions matter at a more local level. They're not insignificant.

I have been walking to work. I recycle. I pick up trash when I see it on the street in my neighborhood. I'm just saying that at the end of the, none of it really matters in the grand scheme of things. I did an undergrad internship at the EPA my junior year. The guy I worked for was the senior scientist in charge of the implementation of the Clean Air Act. I was on the house floor when NAFTA was voted on, as we were in charge of making sure it had environmental regulations as a part of the process. I'm very much an environmentalist, I just think that at the end of the day, nothing I can do will make even a minor difference in the grand scheme of things.

The first part is the core message, but you can say the second piece without the corporate speak of “undercutting funding for IRA.” You can just say “wouldn’t it be better if we had true energy independence here at home that’s not at the mercy of middle eastern chaos or the whims of middle eastern governments and wars?”

Not that exact quote maybe, but you don’t need to mention funding or previous legislation. Just sell the future. We’re beholden to a strait half way across the world that we don’t control, yet we could produce cheaper more consistent energy here at home. That’s not a convoluted message to me.

Fire Truck asks for clearance of the runway, ATC provides it apparently without checking timing of the landing Air Canada flight.

ATC then focused first on getting a Frontier plane to hold its position on a taxiway (different than the plane in the accident) and notices the impending collision late and immediately after telling the Frontier plane to stop is then repeatedly telling the truck to stop.

I'm guessing the truck misses the repeated calls for "truck 1" to stop and thinks the calls are still for the Frontier plane and they roll right out in front of the landing Air Canada plane. Nothing those pilots can do at that speed.
