Which is one reason why Georgia got purple. Housing costs trumps all. Cultural/family reasons to a lesser degree.

Reversing VRA stuff isn’t going to move the needle against this trend. Blue cities in blue states might want to try growing their economies via lowering housing costs. Good luck with that.

But I don’t think very many Ds do enough introspection about why Chicagos black population declined by something like 25% in the last 30 years and places that are “racist” (bad assumption) see their black middle class grow.

More are moving to suburban Cook, Will and NWI.

I think because the decades of redlining, housing segregation, and disinvestment stunted the growth of a strong black middle class outside of some isolated pockets in places, the black migration you see out of Chicago, is more due to current financial and safety issues. As the city continues to gentrify, and the poor continually find their rent and taxes rise, you can't blame them for fleeing to suburbs to hopefully find more affordable housing, better schools, and a safer quality of life.

That said, I'm not sure what the quick solution to that is, considering it's taken 100+ years to sow the seeds of what we are seeing.

Talked to a mixed race couple recently who considered moving from Colorado to Georgia. They couldn’t afford Atlanta proper so visited some more rural areas outside Atlanta. They figured out very quickly that they were not welcome in the communities they visited.

South is less personally racist, more integrated (you find whites and blacks in the same work places, restaurants, youth sports, etc) than the Midwest by a mile.

Black people in the South have separate local pathways to success to a greater degree than in the north. You can be a “big man” purely in the black community in Columbus Georgia. You cannot do that in Peoria Illinois (or it’s much harder).

Don’t take my anecdotes for it alone. Blacks are moving in large numbers *back to the South*. If it was super racist with no economic opportunity they wouldn’t do that.

The “racism” shit is so overplayed in lib politics. Blacks in the South do not live like whites in the north think they live. It isn’t 1960 anymore.

…was the section near the end that explored the divergent fortunes of black internal migrants and the new European immigrants in northern cities, with Chicago being a main example.

The basic point is that the first generation black migrants were wealthier and better educated than the European immigrants, with both populations facing significant housing/neighborhood segregation. But Poles and Italians, etc. were able to quickly blend into the broader population because they weren’t visibly different, while anti-black racism and prejudice was more enduring, and over a generation or two left their descendants significantly behind immigrant families, and still highly segregated.

States can set rules surrounding companies that incorporate in that state, so maybe that’s what this is? If so, it won’t really do much, since the restrictions wouldn’t be binding on companies that incorporate in other states. And there will always be states that set really corporate-friendly rules in place to get more companies to incorporate locally. I think that’s why so many banks are headquartered in Delaware, for example.
