The eagle eyed and long memoried amongst you may have noticed in this Morning Star report a reference to a Jeremy Vanes, chairman of Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

In the 1980s, Vanes was an extreme right wing Eurocommunist member of the old CPGB and wrote numerous letters under the name of Jez Vanes to the right wing weekly 7 Days, set up by the Euros after their loss of the Morning Star was finalised.

He usually wrote joint letters with a female friend/comrade - whose name I can't completely recall and who may not be in the public eye - so I will not bother even trying to look up.

Amongst Straight Lefters, Vanes was described as a "pervert", mainly because of the nonsense about sexual matters he usually wrote about. I vividly remember one of Vanes' statements "the pillowcase is political."

I don't think there was ever any evidence of Vanes being a genuine "pervert" - certainly nothing I knew of - yes his writing was sickly hard right Euro and generally wanted to make you throw up - but I think as a then young person he just liked to talk about sex a lot and to see it in print - as part of his pseudo politics and growing up.

Now chairman of an NHS Trust......
