Favourite piece of jewellery for 2018?? Posted by Beth on December 19, 2018, 11:58 am As we are nearing the end of 2018 I wondered if posters would like to nominate their favourite item of jewellery seen or discussed this year. Please indicate your choice in the subject heading -- that will make it easier for people to follow any comments.

After much agonising, I decided that my favourite is the Greville emerald tiara. It is such a stunning piece, and it was a shock to see it after all our speculating about whether it had survived and been bequeathed to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The TV commentator on the programme I watched on Princess Eugenie's wedding said that the tiara was a great favourite of the Queen. I wonder if that is true or was just waffle?

Greville emerald tiara" Up until 11th October I would've said the tiara worn by the Duchess of Sussex for her wedding but then the Greville emerald turned up and was a run away winner for me!!!

Nellie Melba's corsage jewel/necklace Posted by Beth on December 22, 2018, 4:23 am, in reply to " Greville emerald tiara" Another jewel which interested me enormously this year was Nellie Melba's Cartier corsage jewel/necklace. Before the Cartier exhibition in Canberra this year, I knew nothing about Melba's jewels, and I admit that my interest in her jewels is partly because she is a very famous Australian. Cartier ruby and diamond palm tree brooch Posted by Beth on December 22, 2018, 4:35 am, in reply to "Nellie Melba's corsage jewel/necklace" This brooch was in the Cartier exhibition. The rubies are eye catching, and the jewel, when seen in reality, is much more attractive than my photos suggest. The palm tree motif recalled to my mind the emerald palm tree brooch worn by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. I wonder if Cartier also made that brooch? I also suspect that the emerald palm tree brooch was part of Mrs Greville's jewels. The earliest photos I have so far of HM wearing this jewel are from the 1947 South African tour.

Hi all and seasons greetings, hoping that your Christmas holidays are going well.Thanks Beth for starting this poll and it is going to be difficult to say which is my favourite piece of jewellery for 2018 as I love the Dutch Sapphire tiara and their Stuart one, but my whole sense of things points to the late QEQM's Greville diamond earrings which some feel are the ones the French Queen Marie Antoinette or was it Napoleon's empress Josephine that had previously owned them. I don't know but they are so outstanding and shimmer more than any other piece in HM's vault. Someone I cant remember placed a picture of the present Queen wearing them at a banquet and to me they even looked more outstanding and made the Queen like more regal. Regards, Dave. Dave, are you referring to the pear shaped diamond drop earrings which Mrs Greville bequeathed to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother? If so, here are some images. The photo below was sent to me by Maridje. Thank you Maridje! QEQM wearing them. HM wore these frequently, sometimes even for significant day time events. QEII wearing them for a banquet during the state visit of the President of Turkey in 2011. As far as I know this is the only occasion on which HM was photographed wearing these earrings. The pear shaped diamonds are each slightly over 20 carats! Are they really from the French Empress or Queen I mentioned in my previous contribution? Maybe Vincent may have a clue. For some reason, I get the feeling that such a grand and impressive pair or earrings from lady Greville may have come with a necklace of similar design, I just cant imagine such an impressive pair like these from such a grand lady being on their own. Greville diamond drop earrings" My instinctive reaction is that these diamonds have nothing to do with Marie Antoinette or the Empress Josephine. Apart from anything else all the diamonds appear (to my admittedly inexpert eye) to display modern cutting techniques. According to Hugh Roberts, Mrs Greville appears to have purchased the pear shaped diamond drops through the New York branch of Cartier at some time "before 19 May 1938". Earlier this year this tiara was put up for sale at Sotheby's Geneva, before it was ultimately withdrawn. The lot note read: 'Impressive diamond tiara', which pretty much says it all. It is a beautiful tiara, substantial yet supremely elegant, with historic provenance... the kind of grand, old jewel I like most. Happy Christmas to you all!
