Queen Mary's 1937 garden party brooch Posted by PaulP on February 7, 2023, 10:44 am This 1937 video shows Queen Mary wearing what Beth identified as her diamond sautoir unhinged to form two long necklaces. [Edited to add: Seen at time = 0:45] I had assumed that she wore at her throat her Russian Sapphire Cluster Brooch worn by QEII for her 2014 visit to Italy. But after viewing the Vatican video, to my eyes the Queen Mary 1937 brooch appears to have a larger sapphire. Am I wrong?

It discussed a sapphire or amethyst brooch worn about time 36:50 in this documentary: It looks very similar to me, do you think it's a match?

The brooch seen at 36:50 in your film is indeed very similar to Queen Mary’s. It also reminds me of the bottom section of the Kent amethyst necklace inherited from Q. Victoria’s mother, with pendant removed. However that demi-parure is an Heirloom of the Crown which should have been passed on to Queen consort Elizabeth (QEQM) by 1937 when Mary was a dowager queen.

I guess its possible that queen consort Elizabeth elected to use only the official Kent amethyst brooch which she was photographed wearing during Geo VI’s reign, and Queen Mary retained the necklace (whose elements were detachable) and used the largest section as a brooch in the 1937 video. This brooch from the necklace may well have been used by QEII seen in the 1967 Royal Family film. If this is so, we can keep fingers crossed that one day we will see it worn by queen Camilla.

I spent a few hours endeavouring to find a description of Queen Mary's jewels for that garden party, but to no avail. There was just the usual reference to her magnificent jewels!! I wonder if the brooch could be the amethyst brooch given to Queen Mary as a wedding gift by William Burdett Coutts? The brooch worn by Queen Mary at the garden party looks slightly different depending on the angle of the camera shot -- but There are other occasions where I think Queen Mary might have been wearing that amethyst brooch, but the photos lack definition to be absolutely sure.

[Edited] I suspect that the brooch worn by Mary in your 1893 photos could well be the one seen at the 1937 garden party and worn by QEII in the 1969 documentary
