She saw an orange flash. Danya barely had time to think before light seared across her eyelids; she yelped. It faded and she blinked. Hard. Harder. Hardest. She blinked the tears out of her eyes and gazed into the forest, where the flash had come from. Somehow, she knew she must venture into the dark. Something was there, something was near; it radiated power and she was intrigued.
Trying to shrug aside her grief, and quite failing, Daneliya moved into the trees, her eyes adjusting. Carefully, carefully, she moved. She had time to see a meteor-a meteor?-and then she collapsed in a dead faint, another flash having seared across her lids.
