I was hearing, a few years ago, about an increase in fraud in scientific papers, which often had to do with grants and corporate and government money.

IMO money corrupts everything it touches, especially big money. If there's millions (or billions) in an area of research, then papers will be written and gambles will be taken. That's the greeed which Capitalism is based on, and which corrupts everything around it.

We rarely see that in Anthropology, happily, since no one is handing us $500 million to uncover a newly-discovered Mayan city, let's say...
