Speaking as perhaps the board's only school bus driver... Archived Message

This is going to be so trite that it's unbelievable: I'll have anywhere from 15 to 50 kids on my bus depending on the day or time. But no matter how many I have, they're the most important thing in my world when I'm behind the wheel. It's to the point where I would take a bullet for any of these kids (yes, we have drills to know how to deal with shooters). If the school district asks me to drive with a sheet of ice on the road, I'll go 3 mph to make sure we get where we need to go. If the school district tells me to stay home to ensure everyone's safety, I'll stay home. It sounds great to toss out words such as "liability," but it's not a liability, it's a kid with a name and a smile and a lot of years left on this planet. As bad as I'd feel having to look a parent in the eye and explain why their child is hurt -- or worse -- they would feel infinitely worse. And now I dismount from my soapbox. Previous Message Send a kid out to a bus stop with -25 wind chill, and some parent is going to sue the district if something ends up happening. Buses crash on ice, same thing. Previous Message the rest of the world doesn't shut down just because it gets a little icy or it's cold outside Previous Message Is it because they kids aren't actually learning? The teachers are just getting an off day? Disrupts your day? Previous Message It took 6 minutes longer than usual to get to work this morning. I guess this is the world we live in now, where school gets cancelled, er, excuse me, "pivots to e-learning" every time it snows a little bit, or is cold, or is a little slippery in the morning. Nobody has to make up snow days any more if we just have an "e-learning" day every time it's slightly more difficult than usual for teachers and students to get to school. This isn't San Diego. What an effing joke. [/rant]
