They're actually relatively helpful at our store. I could see a high traffic GC being pretty intimidating if you're an average or beginner player and you've got guys in there shredding.  Previous Message That may be an issue at like a guitar center, which is going to have a huge mix of people and some could be assholes. But if you find a good local shop with a wide selection, there should be someone in that shop who can help point you in the right direction and show you what's important. They can probably show you a couple chords to play to get a sense of feel and they can probably play some stuff for you to get a sense of tone. Give them your budget and stick to it.
