I'd say the big difference is that US winemakers are way more willing to experiment with techniques, while old word wines are more bound by traditions and dogma. Both are equally valid. But, as I said, the fact that European winemakers are sending their next generation to the US to learn techniques says something to me.

And my opinion is that US wine, in general is over produced and doesn't have as much character. I'm not saying it's bad, but in my *opinion* old world wine is much better and French wine is the top of that list.
No one has to agree with me, but the context of the subthread was that tariffs on French wine could easily be forgotten by just going to Virginia and sipping on some of their stuff. And for me, Virginia wine (nor any of the West Coast states) would be as good as what I get from France.
