There are times that as parents we wish to communicate with our high schooler, typically about after school activities. Often it was about transportation on days of late practice or game nights, but that should be less of an issue since she got her driver's license today. That said, while I don't believe the school has a phone ban, I think usage is quite limited and they generally don't have problems with disruptions during class. My students start off respectful and we talk about acceptable use, etc. However, given they know they won't get consequences from a weak handed admin, eventually, their tech addictions win out. but the state passed a law last year requiring districts to establish more restrictive policies. kids can bring phones in our district but can’t have them out. I've seen several iterations of cell phone policy. If you're going to allow cell phones to physically be in the lockers/backpacks or on students, you have to allow them some time to use them. Like between classes, during lunch, study hall, etc. Then it's really up to the teachers to make sure they're not being used in class. If you have a strong set of teachers and an administration that backs them up with discipline, then you can have a balance that allows the phones to not be used in the classroom itself, but allows flexibility in the "free times" of the school day. But if you don't have all of those things, then a full ban makes sense. You'd have to have students check their phones in at the beginning of the day in the office or something like that. That's a lot of phones to store. And some kids will get dummy phones to check in and try to keep their real phone on them. Educationally, cell phones being banned in classrooms is a good thing. It minimizes distractions. But if your school is tech-forward and kids are all on devices, then there's plenty of distractions built in there...they can do the same thing on a device as they can on a cell phone. There is monitoring technology, but it's hard to stay on top of that when you're actively teaching the kids. All in all, it's hard to put the genie back in the bottle with a lot of this stuff, but like most things in the classroom, it's about if you're willing to choose the battle and continue to fight it. And while you'd think the parents would help you, a lot of times it's the parents that are texting and calling kids and somehow expecting immediate responses while the kids are supposed to be focusing on their classes. It’s been moderately successful in mini’s school but kids find a way around the ban. I’d be interested to hear what teachers say. I guess if the kids have to be surreptitious about using their phones, they’re less likely to do it during instruction.
