ours has a watch that she can use for texts/calls. We give her the independence
To ride her bike in our neighborhood, walk to the playground, her friends house etc.. having the ability to reach us/reach her if needed gives us the the confidence to allow that. Now I don't have the experiences you do of having a child so I admit that I could be wildly off, but when would an 11 year old need a smart phone to get a hold of a parent? Wouldn't they either be able to call with a normal phone, or be around an adult with a phone?
