International media this morning seem to have stepped back from assigning responsibility.

Always reliable Al Jazeera asserted a month ago that international claims of approximately 30,000 deaths in the protests were false.

Ever since the crackdown on protests in Iran between January 8 and 10, there has been contention on what the true death toll of those bloody events is. According to figures provided by the Iranian government, 3,117 people were killed, including civilians and security forces. Yet estimates from outside the country have put the number at anywhere between 5,000 and a staggering 36,500.

The gulf states are both hostile to Iran and allies of the US and, increasingly, of Israel.

If they are becoming indiscriminate in their counter strikes, I’d be worried about gulf shipping. I think the world is a lot less dependent on gulf oil than it was 20+ years ago, but that could still cause significant global economic disruption, I think.

ramifications but Iwo Jima absolutely zero. If Hitler and German command really knew in the first hours D Day was the main invasion it might have gotten really dicey. But for Iwo three was nothing Japan could do at that point even if they’d had the information. And tactically nothing would have changed either. Zero room for maneuver on that island of death.

Could be a good, informative discussion. He's a college professor. Last year I highly recommended a book on Iran by Scott Anderson: "King of Kings" about the rise and fall of the shah and the turnover to the ayatollah.

as another eagle required badge, reducing the number of optional ones, and let's be honest, nobody but the Mormons goes beyond the required ones.

I would have been fine with it as an optional one, although it was pretty woke. I agree with their statement that the lessons were throughout scouting in general.

I still keep in touch with the eagles from my troop. As we've grown, we've all adopted different philosophies (and I think that's great!), but we all universally rolled our eyes when it came out.

• What could the students have done?

7. Identify and interview an individual in your community, school, and/or Scouting who has had a significant positive impact in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. That doesn't mean you stop re-evaluating given new data and parameters. And it certainly doesn't give cover to change established guidance unless there's real data that may contradict.

What we do know is based on current data, the benefits of vaccinations outpace actual risk. Even if (and I know it doesn't) vaccines elevated the risk for autism, the result of an autism diagnosis wildly outweighs the lasting effects (or death) from measles or any other major disease.

It doesn't mean we should stop evaluating side effects to vaccines.

The entire ethos of science is taking what is established knowledge or theory and testing it

It’s a shitty situation and it’s annoying that Trump had to do what he does and cause this shit to blow up. And I would have hoped that the players could have reacted better in the moment, even if I think it’s just knee jerk awkward laughter that happened spontaneously when you’re amped up and having to listen to the equivalent of a terrible standup routine.

But the vast majority of people who are truly outraged about this never cared about hockey before and were never going to care about hockey long-term. I find it very hard to believe that many young girls starting to get into hockey have now chosen to not do that because of the men’s team laughing at the joke.

To me, I'm fine with both the guys going and gals not going. You can understand why most of the women on the team would not want to be there (probably), and why most of the guys would.

I would say I kinda feel sorry for the guys...going to the White House is supposed to be really dignified, and I'm sure it was less dignified due to the person that currently occupies it. That being said, the hockey guys probably enjoyed it as much as the Bama team did back in 2018 when Trump stuffed them full of McDonald's.

If somebody puts on a MAGA hat in 2026, they open themselves up to whatever judgement they incur. And I didn't say I supported that or that they shouldn't be subject to whatever reaction they get.

But I wasn't even aware of the MAGA hat thing, and when you said "oh what about the MAGA hats", I assumed there was a picture of all of them wearing them, which would certainly suggest that they were given them and told to put them on. (which is what I suggested as a possibility before I had seen the pic)

Now seeing the pictures that are out there (or really "picture") shows three guys with hats. Which would stand to reason the rest of them didn't wear them, and there's obviously a lot more than 3 players. So yeah, the hats were probably their own (or provided) and worn willingly by those three players, and people are free to judge those guys as they will.

But I don't think going to the White House is something that should be held against the team. Just like I think not going shouldn't be held against the women's team.

I'm not going to go all Disney "Miracle" on it, but in terms of being inspiring to a whole group of Americans, at a time where national morale was really low, how, at least for a time, that win really helped move Hockey from being a more niche sport to national interest can't be understated.

Now achieving this Gold was no where in the ballpark of that one, but still with this AND the women's team, the NHL and the US hockey community at large had a real opportunity to build support, ESPECIALLY among women and minorities (Heated Rivalry with a huge assist as well), which the NHL has stated is they need if they are going to grow the sport in the US.

Then moments after winning, the Pedo Prez and US Boys team reminded everyone that women really were kinda welcome in their boys club, just as long as they sat in the back of the bus. Then partied it up, and played willing propaganda props with a president who is actively threatening black and brown people, and who recently insinuated black people are apes.

It was like scoring a hat trick of own goals.

because they’ve spent their entire lives with hockey teams on buses between Kamloops and Great Falls and Albany and Goose Bay. A lot of athletes grow up sheltered, but hockey players particularly so. There’s plenty of evidence of that.

I also don’t believe that the vast majority of people would’ve acted much differently if they were 27 and had just won the biggest thing in their lives to that point. I think you probably view everything through a political lens more than probably 99.99% of the population does, but especially compared to young professional athletes, let alone 20 minutes after winning a gold medal. If they’re out on the street doing ride-alongs like John Rocker in the offseason, that’s one thing. Right now? Nah.

Notice that we aren't having this same discussion about a women's team who also beat Canada for a gold medal. It's almost, unlike the boys, they handled victory with class and didn't allow themselves to be exploited for someone else's political benefit.

Like BJL said, they're just hoping that after the next hit, the next goal, the next save, all will be forgotten. It's been that way their whole life, any bad behavior was negated by their incredible talent, or explained away by folks like you who don't think they could have possibly had the time to be raised properly.
