I gave up using the laptop on the seat a while back; my iPhone gets a reasonable 4G signal in most places now as we stay off those winding backroads (!).
Best HF radio Ive had in a car was my old ICOM IC725, from the days when I did HF mobile. Got out quite well on the higher bands, but below 80m the efficiency into my whip was poor. I had opened it up to transmit on all frequencies (a quite simple mod, hardly more than a few diodes!) but it wouldn't give much down below a meg or so.
Here's a snap I just did of the display. No jiggery-pokey, its standard in Merc's - you just click AM twice - once for LW, twice for SW. I reckon many radios do it, but they never put it in the English manuals.
