Absolutely true. However, the VAST majority of trans athletes...
...DO fit into the usual binary gamete model. Most are XY trans women (trans men athletes competing in men's categories are incredibly rare...for obvious reasons). Most have not undergone any medical transition (that is, they are intact males), and thus these competitors retain all or at least the greater part of the considerable athletic advantage male puberty conveys. Bringing women's sports to where it is today, a place that includes multiple successful professional competitions and leagues in multiple sports, has been the work of decades by literally millions of people. These people were often combating institutional misogyny at its worst. Allowing males into these competitions will cause (and in some cases already has caused) girls and women to elect not to participate in competitions they have no realistic chance to win. It threatens the very existence of women's professional sports (trust me, no one is going to buy tickets to see males dominate these competitions). What to do with those comparatively rare individuals who are both biologically non-binary and want to compete in athletics? Case-by-case basis, perhaps? To be blunt, these cases are simply not as pressing a matter as preserving opportunities in sports for millions and millions of females. "The needs of the many..."
