Iowa: 55 WI: 48 (7 yards) IL: 45 MD: 60 (15 yards) UMASS: 81 PSU: 60 (21 yards) IU: 47 UM: 20 (27 yards) PU: 51 OSU: 41 (10 yards) MSU: 38 RU: 70 (33 yds - about twice as many for RU and they won)
just not that much difference in outcome. it's like one explosive play or less in most cases.

one, the discrepancy between teams is rarely very large. we remember the back breaking holding play our team commits, we forget the back breaking holding penalty they commit.
second, and more important, most drives end in a punt anyway. penalty just increases the chance your drive ends in a punt.
points are scored because of explosive plays. success rate just helps your drive survive long enough to find an explosive play. when you take a penalty, it means you probably have to find an explosive play quickly, but if you find the explosive play before 4th down, the penalty doesn't matter.

In my head it seems important. Don't sabotage your own offensive scheming, don't give your opponent additional advantages. And penalties seems like it would indicate a lack of discipline overall. It does not seem coincidental that we had our lowest penalty game of the season vs MD.

Explosive plays… Washington and Bryant
Success rate… Feagin keeping us ahead of the sticks
Points in the scoring areas… 2-2 for two TDs in the RZ
Field position… they onside kicked it to us and we had two great punt returns
Turnovers… even, but you could argue the onside kick was a turnover by then the way it flipped field position
All the other stuff ppl talk about like penalties, time of possession, etc is noise

We won because we took advantage of mistakes and limited our own.
After getting demolished by Purdue and Nebraska, how are we good enough to play this team even, on the road, a week later? A team that played even with Ohio State?
And if we are that good, why did we blow a 10 point second half lead?
I just can’t think of any way we can be as “bad” as our record indicated and still play the way we did yesterday. It’s not like 4 fumbles all bounced our way.
So if we’re not that “bad”, why did we suck so badly for the first 6 games?
