minimal spoilers.
Poor Things- Loved it. Typical Yorgos Lanthimos weirdness and lewdness that a lot of people won't be able to get past. But it's clever, funny, and well done. Emma Stone deserves the Oscar she'll get. Definitely a twist on the typical "coming of age" plot.
The Holdovers- So damn good. This is how you write and act a movie. Each character has depth and has an arc. Their lives feel lived in and not just acted through. The acting was so damn good in this. Giamatti was excellent as he usually is. It was the first acting role ever for the student and he was excellent. Randolph will probably get a deserved oscar, too.
Zone of Interest- Fucking haunting. It's like a horror movie that lets your mind fill in the gaps on the truly scary parts. It never shows you the true horror. Instead, you constantly hear bits of it and see signs like smoke billowing from the smokestack or the train pulling in. I did some reading on the making of the movie and they went to great lengths to make it as historically accurate as possible. They converted an abandoned home to match the original home and filmed around the camp. This film embodies the oft-used Hannah Arendt phrase, "the banality of evil."
