Granted, I didn't play sports, but I remember smart college entrants from my high school class going to places like Eureka or Eastern so that they could play softball or run track.
They were smart. They weren't from families that needed the money.
Similarly, my wife's young cousin is headed to college at Cal State Dominguez Hills so she can continue playing soccer. She's a straight A student with high test scores and a great resume. She'd likely get into her choice of UC schools and is gonna go to fucking Dominguez Hills to continue playing soccer.
