Rayne felt herself trembling as she followed some of the others up to the ice. She kept her chin high, meeting her son Radke’s gaze in the crowd. But despite her broken wing, which hung limply and loosely at her side, and the death of her son, she had a new strength. A new steel. It made Rayne uncomfortable to be up in front of others, as it always had. That depression was still eating away at her mood. But she seemed to have been changed by the battle. Everything was different. She held herself tall.
Was it her peace with the situation with Bastian? His words that lit a fire in her? So what if she had told Beartooth. He was the one who decided to start a war. Rayne stood proud. Then she heard the male, Ares, speak up: “I would like to claim Lova and Dwyn.”
Rayne looked with interest at these two. Lova, a daughter of Soraya and Beartooth. Dwyn, a daughter of the two betas, one being Beartooth’s daughter, Skadi. Hmm. They were pretty, she could give them that. Then it hit her: could Rayne be claimed for her looks? She’d been remarked on as pretty, but never thought of herself as so. But she was a crippled bird-winged woman. Who would want her? Certainly not any smart man.
