Irina stood stone-silent as Hecate raged at her. When she was done, Irina watched her go. But then her eyes caught on Alistair. A boy was standing over him: Redd. She knew it was him. And he had just killed her love.
“No!” she screamed. Irina leapt over a pair of bodies and hightailed it to the boy, slamming him to the ground. Lightning struck the earth, frying a nearby wolf and ripping a malicious burn along Redd’s back. “You insipid, evil, frog-eyed dirtbucket of a waste of breath! He trusted you! He loved you!” Her breath caught in her throat. Her claws dug into the boy’s neck. She was brimming with anger. Thunder deafened everyone on the battlefield as lightning struck and the storm frothed in Irina’s veins. Rain whipped a mass of water into wolves’ eyes. Several even might’ve been burned. She heard her daughter’s cry: “Mother! Mother!” Of course Goldie knew this was her mother’s doing.
“I am going to make you wish you were dead,” she breathed to Redd. Then, she sliced her claws along his sides and neck. She pressed her full weight down until she heard and felt the pop of his elbow. And then she saw her daughter’s body.
Irina leapt off Redd with a howl. Lightning flashed and thunder crashed. Kára lay dead in a pool of blood and rain. Irina spun, scenting the explanation on the wind. Lucaya. Her eyes glowed with malice and rage and grief. [Death of Typhon and mutilation of Redd]
Emilia ;
Emilia retreated from a brawl with the Sindri delta. She was panting and dripping in blood. She loved it. She had scarred the girl, the youngest delta she’d ever seen. It was exhilarating.
Her eyes locked on a son of the king and queen of Tarben. Emilia’s lips slit in a smile. She’d seen one of them dead already. Surely she could deal a good blow to the royals by killing yet another one of their children. She lunged, taking him by surprise. He yelped, but Emilia sank her claws into his neck. With a loud rip, she tore out his throat. Emilia howled her triumph to the sky. It wasn’t her first life she’d taken. She wore them like badges of honor. She’d killed plenty of times back before Starfall. [Death of Haladki]
Ares ;
Ares’ sight locked on an African wild dog. He advanced on her, her mewling cry music to his ears: “Please . . . I’m not involved!” Ares scoffed. His eyes glowed bright with lust. His training with Beartooth had made him a true Dane.
“If you don’t wish to die, little girl, then you don’t go waltzing onto a battlefield,” he snarled. Coward. He leapt on her, shredding his claws through her fur and skin. A claw raked over her face and he stabbed his back claws into her stomach. One last slash across the heart, then he was bounding away, leaving her to die. [Beginning of Lazarus’ death]
Guinevere ;
The fairy vampire of Tarben stepped on a dead body in her haste to get to a Dawnshire girl. Okay . . . she was also finding it hard to see. Some Elemental was p i s s e d. The Monokeros had deep wounds, that would likely leave scars. She launched at the wolf. The lady looked up, saw her, and yelped. Suddenly Guinevere was blinded, and she landed with a thud. She felt claws on her legs and chest. She snarled, biting and feeling her teeth rake through fur. She took to the sky, but that neon green horn was stabbing into her leg. Guinevere hissed.
Rayne ;
The winged fem was shaking. She perched in a tree, tears and rain impairing her vision. She was replaying Bastian’s last words to her. You . . . you caused this. It rang over and over. Rayne had watched him be murdered. She had seen Beartooth with blood on his teeth. And she had spotted her son’s dead body. Which was why she was now sobbing in a tree. Arvin had died because of her. But the fear and shame turned to steel. What had Bastian ever done for her? Give her three dead children? Leave her when they had just turned out dead? Beartooth was right. Bastian wasn’t a good father, nor a good mate. He was just a nobody. Now a ghost.
She barreled from the tree to take on the nearest opponent.
Delilah ;
Delilah was frozen over the body of Nightingale’s theta. Godd a m m i t, Mom. Queen Irina told you to stay back! She-she told you! Delilah choked on her sob when a wolf slammed into her. The ess was flailing and clawing. Delilah slapped her away, but she came back. F u c k her! Delilah smacked the winged challenger away from her mother’s corpse. She was too beautiful. Too bad Delilah would have to kill her.
