It seems like if I do it, I have a better quality of sleep. At least for a while. It just seems to work better than going to sleep thinking about stuff. When my mind is already active, and I nod off, it usually keeps on going more in my sleep.
It's hard to describe this to someone. Because thinking about stuff is consciousness incarnate. I remembered, from a long time ago, someone describing clearing your mind of thoughts. That had never occurred to me before I heard it. You have to practice it and work on it a bit, but it is kind of refreshing.
