I did a bit of googling a few weeks ago and couldn’t even find current data and trends on traffic at official crossings and applicants there, much less volumes of illegal crossings. I’m sure it’s out there somewhere if I knew where to look. From the broader population data I’ve seen, it does seem like the volume of illegal immigration is down quite a bit from where it has been in the past, which of course isn’t the same thing as it not being a significant issue. Because the volumes in the past were really high. Link below, for example, shows an estimate of the overall illegal population remain pretty steady over the past decade. https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/11/16/what-we-know-about-unauthorized-immigrants-living-in-the-us/ Previous Message And I will say this regarding your second concern. The border isn't secure, and there is a great deal of illegal entries. You are wrong to dismiss it by saying that "if it was so easy to sneak in, why are so many trying to do it legally." There's a significant amount of human and drug smuggling as well. The problem is that the Trump crowd is also wrong. This shit happens where we have a wall as much as it happens in segments where the wall doesn't exist but it is actively policed by Border Patrol. Building the Wall is not going to fix anything; I've never heard a single person with actual working knowledge of border security say otherwise. The other issue that the Trump crowd is wrong about is that the vast, vast majority of illegal entries are NOT violent criminals looking to rape your women and murder your children. They're overwhelmingly comprised of indigent, unskilled, and woefully uneducated people looking to connect with friends and family. Many of these are criminals, but the crimes that they have committed are previous illegal entries. The minority are comprised of smugglers. So it isn't like you can equate number of illegal entries to number of criminals on the streets. But because you can find numerous examples of truly bad guy criminals who illegally crossed the border, it is red meat for the masses that leads to biggotry.
