The converse of that, which most on the left seem to not want, is then making illegal immigration violations pretty severe / draconian.

I can understand the good faith argument against illegal immigration (without a pathway to citizenship, it becomes a net drag on public resources), though there is more than enough credible evidence that illegal immigrants still provide an overall economic boon.
But beyond bigotry, fear mongering about drug cartels and terrorists and general "I don't like brown people" dog whistling, what is the credible argument to actually opening up the borders and making it easier for immigrants to come, work, and assimilate?
If the argument is that the system is overwhelmed, so people seek asylum or bypass our porous borders, tell me why we shouldn't fix that problem and make it easier. I understand why we won't or can't (political expediency and both sides creating a wedge issue), but tell me why we shouldn't.
