But WFH also opens things up geographically on both sides. So your hiring pool is bigger, along with the number of jobs a person can apply for.
Lots of smaller companies are embracing it to cut down expenses on office space. This is nothing new, IBM did that 30 years ago.
I left my last job specifically because of RTO. There was zero value in commuting to an office where nobody else I worked with daily was located. It's just boomer micromanagement.
I do agree many companies are pulling back. But it's an uphill battle. And they are losing a lot of talent over it. Like anything else in our fine country, other companies will look to take advantage of that by offering what people want.

I’m not aware of any companies shifting to MORE WFH flexibility. There are gobs of companies everyday moving to LESS WFH flexibility. The toothpaste is being put back in the tube.

One younger gal who is an entrepreneur and CEO said hybrid is what they target as management values in office "collaboration" but they realize that if they want younger talented people full time RTO will hinder their options. Also mentioned that people want to see value for coming in to the office. If they are commuting they especially want it to be worthwhile. Purposeful meetings, catering in lunches, team building activities etc.
Two of the pro-WFH people mentioned that it's one of the few real tangible benefits people have seen added in recent years, especially compared to other developed countries. Flexibility is king. They compared it to trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube. Said it ain't happening. People will continue to shift to companies that offer it, and companies looking for advantages will offer it. Kara Swisher ended it by saying something like "I like churning butter, but we're not going back to that either." Lol.

Just had an announcement that we are going from full time telework for all non-supervisors to 3 days/week in office starting in a couple on months. I bet we lose 10-20% of the workforce in the next 6 months. Certainly tips the balance for me way towards leaving, if I can find a gig.
But at least we can all improve collaboration by calling into meetings from our desks in the office instead of from our desks at home.
