How she came to find out that Maleren was dead, Belladonna would never remember, but when she returned and saw that her daughter was gone, she yelled at Hael to stay there and had gone racing off after Hazel.
She feared the worst had happened to Hazel. This might not be like any of the other times she had run off. Maybe whoever had killed Mal would come after Belladonna, Hazel, and Hael. This was a game Belladonna would not dare to play. In all of her warrior years, she had never shirked from a game or challenge. But this was different, this was the life of her children.
At the Babbling Brook, she had no luck. She skirted Sabertooth borders-and found her daughter passed out, possibly dead, by a tree.
“HAZEL!” screamed Belladonna, and then she was falling, falling, falling.
“And ten crows for the devil’s own self.”
