Anabel hadn’t seen Raela in a long time, and Emilia was not a very non-argumentative being to speak to. So she wandered Starfall. Anabel had seen the caves of ice, and the Wildflower Fields. She knew the Ashen Woodlands by heart, and most of the brook. The brook-long ago, she’d seen a wolf murder another there, but that was old history.
She reentered the Firefly Forest, determined to carve on her heart another map. All she had was the land, and herself. She loved to explore. She leapt over a fallen tree and squirreled her way through a patch of dead, crumbling ivy.
The snow crunched beneath her paws, as she emerged into the tiniest of clearings, lit by yellow flashing fireflies. Anabel stared-in winter, didn’t fireflies die or something? They probably were summer creatures, felled by the harshness of cold and snow. She watched them dancing and blinking, until she grew dizzy and thudded to the earth.
“So draw your knives, ladies, prepare for war. . . .”
