Remus processed her words. “I needed a break. You would think, being as quiet as it is, Sabertooth could just offer me a bit of peace.” He frowned. “But no. Apparently I need to take a walk and make a fool of myself in front of a pack member. It’s hard to think when your sister is fluttering around looking for your missing nephew. I’m Remus, by the way. Nice to meet you . . .” He noticed Artemis was refusing to look at him. That was surely bad. An internal sigh made itself known. He was secretly wondering about the pyre-like things, but all things considered, he thought it too awkward to ask. Especially if it turned out they weren’t pyres.
The bluffs were beautiful. Remus craned his head to catch sight of a bird flying across the bluff-
And immediately yelled out in pain. His tail felt like it was being split, and on his legs and tail and back he felt like he was being burned to the point of bubbling. Just as soon, it was gone. Remus craned around and gasped. He now had two tails, and-just like a lot of the rest of his family-he flaunted snake scales. He looked back at Artemis.
"Pain makes you stronger!"
